Modeling the optical properties of twisted bilayer photonic crystals

Abstract We demonstrate a photonic analog of twisted bilayer graphene that has ultra-flat bands and exhibits extreme slow-light behavior. Our device, which an operating wavelength in the C-band telecom window, uses two crystalline silicon crystal slabs separated by methyl methacrylate tunneling layer. numerically determine magic angle using finite-element method corresponding band structure, flat over entire Brillouin zone. This causes group velocity to approach zero introduces light localization, enhances electromagnetic field at expense bandwidth. Using our original plane-wave continuum model, we find system larger asymmetry. The structure can easily be engineered adjusting device geometry, giving significant freedom design devices. work provides fundamental understanding properties crystals opens door nanoscale-based enhancement nonlinear effects.
